ABOUT OUR LAST MEETING
CVS 2004: An Affaire to Remember
Our annual CVS on March 9 at the Regent Beverly
Wilshire Hotel was a night to remember for everyone in attendance.
The Grand Ballroom has never looked more glamorous
with the showcased projects of our industry leaders and innovators.
For that touch of Hollywood glamour, our past APALA President, Lynne
Gullo showcased the NBC 2004 Olympic Presentation Book, printed by Anderson
Printing. Sublime examples of automotive print were also showcased.
Representing the Designory, was Beckie Klarstrom with the Nissan 2005
Pathfinder Prelaunch promo, printed by Anderson Lithograph and Natalia
Casemore showcasing the Infiniti 2004 QX56 Brochure, printed by Lithographix.
Maritzs Andy Acostas submission of the 2004 Elite of Lexus
collateral highlighted the corporate/dealer design arena. On a more
intimate scale, the self-promo submitted by Jan Weinberg held its
own with the big ticket projects. B&G House of Printing
masterfully executed the print and bindery.
The annual scavenger hunt gave many a perfect excuse
not to get bogged down catching up with former co-workers. I would probably
cut a conversation short with the Dali Lama if it meant a free Starbucks
card. Not only was the Starbucks gift card a great incentive to check
out new vendors, it was a great opportunity to grab some great SWAG.
Jennifer Sheppard from Domtar never disappoints in the swag department
with the sunglass cases and Chinese Health Ball necklaces. The soothing
chime is a quick alternative to a Down Dog yoga position in your cubicle.
Effective Graphics swag was definitely the coolest and most useful thing
since you know what, an all-in-one highlighter with Post-it flags. Watch
out sliced bread! Coyle Reproductions had Spiderman and Pirates of the
Caribbean window clings a must have for anyone with kids. Tom
Donahue Jr. of Donahue Printing kept a festive atmosphere passing out
goblets of champagne. And Graphic Orb kept the thirsty masses refreshed
with their custom bottled water. Dolores Galloway from Fraser Papers
provided beautiful gift bag and stationary writing sets for use on future
festive occasions.
The annual scavenger hunt also provided the opportunity
to enter and win some fabulous door prizes. Our Scavenger Hunt winners
were:
Grand Prize, MP3/CD Player, Jodie Gammon, Freelance
Runner up, Custom necklace by Jenny Allen, Elizabeth
Wold, Grey Worldwide
Some of the other door prizes included an Apple
iPod from Primary Color, a retro beach cruiser from Nationwide Papers
and a signed Frank Gehry coffee table book printed on Sappi Paper, compliments
of Joyce Pekala, Sappi Fine Paper.
For those who were not participating in the scavenger
hunt, there was plenty of eye candy to checkout at the different booths
like the Seinfeld DVD collection at the C&S Sales booth, and the
Official Friends cookbook at Insync.Medias booth.
We cant forget the marvelous catering. There
was something delicious for everyone, whether you are an Atkins or other
diet du jour devotee -- Jumbo shrimp cocktail, spinach salad and brownies,
a foodies delight.
Last but not least, Co-chairs Paurvi Trivedi and
Jorge Velasquez did a tremendous job of putting together this years
event. Can we say multi-tasking! Of course none of this would have been
possible without the legions of dedicated volunteers who tirelessly
donate their time to make each year even more successful that the last.
