January Meeting Recap
The Art of Communication
With the New Year just behind us and resolutions still fresh in our
minds, Chris Berg's presentation came at a great time. Chris is a nationally
acclaimed success coach and spent two years as Top Corporate Coach for
Anthony Robbins. According to Coach Chris, people who have attained
excellence:
* know what they want
* take action
* notice if their action is on track
* change their approach if required
This ability to "get what you want" stems
from exhibiting several
traits. One of the seven important traits is mastery of communication.
Your ability to get what you want is directly related to the quality
of your communication, said Chris. One way to improve our communication
is to understand the style of communication best suited to the person
you are trying to influence.
There are three types of communication styles: Visual,
Auditory and Kinesthetic. Visual people tend to be animated and rely
on what they can see. Auditory thinkers speak slower and rely more on
what is being said than on what they see. Kinesthetic individuals think
with their feelings and gut-level emotions.
Each style will also express themselves with words
or phrases that match their communication method. *
A visual communicator would say, "Do you see what I mean?"
An auditory person would say, "Do you hear what I'm saying?
A kinesthetic thinker would say, "Do you grasp how it works?
If you find it hard to get your point across to
someone, evaluate what style of communicator they are and then adapt
your style to fit theirs. This approach is extremely helpful in building
instant rapport and in helping the other person absorb your message.
Since groups tend to exhibit all three styles, the best way to influence
the masses is by appealing to all three systems.
Before Coach Chris sent us out to tackle the world
with our new
sophisticated communication skill set, he reminded us that the best
way to participate in life was with reckless abandon. Instead of walking
around the rain puddle, or complaining about the rain puddle being there,
he encouraged us to jump in it and enjoy the experience!
The APALA would like to thank Michael Blaker of
Costello Brothers for coordinating this exciting presentation. To learn
