One
of the many services the APALA provides to the production/
traffic/studio community is the APALA Employment Network.
Over the years, the network has helped to link hundreds
of job candidates with potential employers - often resulting
in satisfying, prosperous careers. The network handles
full-time and freelance positions, and is coordinated
by active APALA members on a volunteer basis. Read on
for a summary of what you need to know to best take
advantage of this service.
How
Do I Get Started?
If
you are looking for a job, you initiate your activity
in the service by calling one of the Employment Network
Coordinators. An employee candidate must currently be
an APALA member in order to register with the network.
We will then send you an Employee Summary Form which
captures the most important details such as years of
experience, salary range, availability, etc. to complete
and return to us along with a resume. From this information,
we add your name to our database. If you are an employer
with a position to fill, you may call one of the Employment
Network Coordinators to request an Employer Summary
Form. This form captures the same type of information
as the employee's form - experience needed, job requirements,
salary range, etc.
What
Happens Next?
We
then provide the prospective employer with the names
and phone numbers of everyone in our database who closely
fits the employer's job description. The APALA will
provide names and contact numbers only. It is up to
the employer to make the contact and obtain a resume.
The APALA will not send out resumes; they are kept on
file for our reference only.
Timing
We always strive to respond to an employer's request
as soon as possible upon receipt of the Employer Summary
Form. Normal response time is within 3 working days,
depending on the Employment Network Coordinators' regular
job workloads. If your need is urgent be sure to let
us know, but please keep in mind that this is a volunteer
service.
Will
the APALA Make Recommendations?
No.
It is important to remember that the APALA's role is
purely as a facilitator, not as a referral service.
We do not make recommendations or offer opinions to
either employee or employer.
6-Month
Limit Job candidates' names will be kept on file for
6 months from the date the Employee Summary Form is
received. It's up to you to let us know if you want
your name to remain active after that. You are welcome
to re-submit your name at any time.
Confidentiality?
We
make every effort to keep all information confidential.
However, if confidentiality is of particular concern
to you, you may want to think carefully before faxing
forms or having lists of names faxed to you. Remember
that the APALA volunteers are usually work-ing from
their own offices just as you are. We cannot take responsibility
for faxes or any other correspondence that might inadvertently
be seen by others. We recommend you call first to alert
us if you are sending a fax. When time allows, the good
old U.S. Mail is safest.
Helpful
Hints Employees.
If
you find a job, please let us know!
Employers:
If
you fill a position, please let us know! It helps immensely
to keep our files current, and saves you the trouble
of possibly receiving outdated information from us later
on. Freelancers: if you are working long-term or accept
a permanent position, please let us know! Remember that
we can add your name back at any time. It is very frustrating
to an employer to be given a list of candidates and
then find out that most of them are unavailable. When
the employee or employer completes the appropriate Summary
Form, it may be wise to be flexible with your answers
but you should also be realistic.
For
example, a yearly salary range stated as $20,000 - $50,000
may be a little too broad. The more accurate our information
from you, the better match we can make. Another resource
for freelancers is the APALA newsletter The Blueline,
in which a list of freelancers is pub-lished each month.
Please note that this list is maintained independently
of the Employment Network. Therefore, you must call
the APALA office to request that your name be listed.
Similarly, if you are already listed in The Blueline,
you must register with the Employment Network separately
if you wish to participate.
